Ulmus americana ‘Eisenhower’

Eisenhower American Elm

Traveling on I-475 near Macon, GA, John Barbour noticed a tree in the wooded buffer area near one of the Macon interchanges that looked like a "green wall"-it was completely thick and full from the ground up with awesome dark green foliage. From afar he thought it was a Hornbeam, but on closer inspection he discovered it to be an American Elm! This particular American Elm was unique with its much denser branching than the other varieties present; in addition, the tree had vibrant green new growth! True to JB's motto-"Up The Right Tree"- he discovered an access road that ran behind the buffer, making it easier to park at night, walk through the woods, and take cuttings-without the whole "freeway world" watching! After 10 years in the nursery and now planted on landscape projects, we are confident this is a great selection for any landscape. Since it was discovered on an interstate highway, it was given the variety name 'Eisenhower'-in honor of President Eisenhower who initiated the interstate highway system.
