Bobby Dodd Holly
Bobby Dodd, son of the great nurseryman Tom Dodd of Semmes, AL., collected some seed from a female I. latifolia-Luster Leaf Holly-growing at the greenhouse at Auburn University. Mr. Tom planted the seed and all of them ended up looking similar, and he determined that the pollinator was I. cornuta-Chinese Holly. He continued to propagate many of the females and they were named, as a group, the "Auburn Hollies". One of them, #119, was planted at brother Tom Dodd Jr.'s house, and grew into a beautiful pyramidal, dark green large shrub with heavy, large red berries. After brother Bobby passed away, Tom Jr. named this plant for him. Bobby Dodd Holly will grow to 25' and is more shade tolerant than most Hollies.
